Understanding Your Legal Aid Options

Free legal aid in Texas is provided primarily through Legal Aid of NorthWest Texas and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid, both of which serve Tarrant County. Eligibility is income-based — typically 200% of the federal poverty level or below. For a single person in 2026, that’s approximately $30,120/year; for a family of four, approximately $62,400/year.

Legal aid organisations can help with a wide range of civil (non-criminal) legal matters, including family law (divorce, child custody, protective orders), housing (eviction defence, housing discrimination), consumer protection, public benefits, and immigration. They do NOT handle criminal defence — for that, contact the Tarrant County Public Defender’s office at (817) 884-1233.

Even if you do not qualify for free legal aid, low-cost options exist. Many Arlington TX attorneys offer free 30-minute consultations, and the Tarrant County Bar Association’s Lawyer Referral Service offers a $20 initial consultation with a licensed attorney.

For immigration-specific legal help, the Catholic Charities office in Arlington (817-277-3939) provides accredited immigration representatives at reduced cost.
